This banner is based on the ongoing sewage pollution crisis in the Thames River, where raw and untreated sewage is frequently discharged due to failing infrastructure and inadequate regulations. Despite public outrage and multimillion-pound fines for water companies, sewage spills have continued to rise, posing severe threats to public health, biodiversity, and water quality. The banner aims to call attention to the government’s failure to enforce stricter pollution controls and the urgent need for better water treatment systems, particularly as Thames Water faces mounting lawsuits and scrutiny.

Sewage Discharge Statistics: In 2021, raw sewage was released 372,533 times over 2.7 million hours, and in 2022, 301,000 times over 1.75 million hours.
Environmental Violations: In 2022, Thames Water was found to have illegally discharged sewage hundreds of times on days without rainfall, known as “dry spilling,” which is illegal under UK environmental law. Legal Actions: In March 2025, six British water companies, including Thames Water, faced lawsuits totaling over £1.5 billion for allegedly under-reporting sewage discharges and overcharging customers. Although the cases were dismissed due to legal technicalities, the tribunal indicated they would have approved the cases otherwise.
Pollution Incidents: Thames Water was fined £3.3 million in July 2023 for discharging undiluted sewage into rivers, resulting in significant fish deaths.
Infrastructure Challenges: The Thames Tideway Scheme, a £4.2 billion project, is under construction to reduce sewage discharges into the Thames by 90%. Despite this, it is estimated that two million tones of sewage will still enter the Thames each year after its completion. Over half of Thames Water’s 351 sewage plants lack the capacity to process sufficient wastewater, leading to untreated effluent spilling into rivers.
